About the Rolex Explorer
Rolex introduced the Explorer in 1953, the year of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. It was designed as a robust tool watch for mountaineers. The first reference, 6350, set the pattern that the line has followed: a dial with 3, 6 and 9 numerals, a steel Oyster case and a self-winding movement. After a period at 39mm from 2010, Rolex returned the Explorer to 36mm in 2021 and added a 40mm version in 2023. The 2021 36mm model uses the self-winding calibre 3230 and shows time only.
