About the Rolex Sea-Dweller

The Sea-Dweller dates from 1967 and was built for saturation divers, who spend long periods at depth breathing a helium and oxygen mix. Its defining feature is the helium escape valve, which lets helium that has entered the case escape during decompression so the crystal is not forced off. The first production reference, 1665, had a 40mm case rated to 610 metres, and later references raised this to 1,220 metres. In 2017 Rolex enlarged the case to 43mm with reference 126600, which added calibre 3235 and, for the first time on a Sea-Dweller, a Cyclops lens over the date. A steel and yellow gold version, reference 126603, followed in 2019.
