About the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 with reference 6239, a chronograph intended for racing drivers to measure elapsed time and calculate average speed. Reference 6239 placed the tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial, a feature the line has kept. Early models used manually wound movements. In 1988 the second series brought a self-winding movement based on the Zenith El Primero, and in 2000 Rolex fitted its own chronograph, calibre 4130. The fourth generation, launched in 2023, has a 40mm case and uses calibre 4131.
